Objectives of Ocean Data Portal

The IODE Ocean Data Portal (ODP) aims to facilitate and promote the exchange and dissemination marine data and services. The ODP provides seamless access to collections and inventories of marine data from the NODCs in the IODE network and allows for the discovery, evaluation (through visualisation and metadata review) and access to data via web services.

The ODP provides on-line access to distributed marine data:

  • at operational and delayed-mode time scales
  • at various processing level (observation, climate, analysis, forecast)
  • across both oceanographic and meteorological domains
  • from multiple data source formats

The key principle behind the IODE Ocean Data Portal is its interoperability with existing systems. The IODE is working closely with the Joint WMO-IOC Technical Commission for Oceanography and Marine Meteorology (JCOMM) to ensure the ODP is interoperable with the WMO Information System (WIS) that will provide access to meteorological and oceanographic data to serve a number of applications, including climate.

Ocean Data Portal Architecture

ODP architecture
The ODP uses open standards and open source components and is based on the Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) model and is based on the “client-server with mediator and wrappers” concept and includes the following components:
  • Data Provider (wrapper) provides access to data and metadata from the local data systems and is the data source for the distributed data system
  • Integration Server (mediator) provides registration and operation status monitoring of the distributed data sources, harvesting of the discovery metadata in coordination with Data Provider, management of the common codes/dictionaries and access to distributed data sources by ODP services.
  • ODP services provide administration, discovery, viewing, analysis and download. This includes GIS-based user interface, metadata and data search, data download and visualisation components.

Data Access

ODP discovery service interface
The ODP provides the following services for data and product dissemination:
  • Discovery service disseminates a data source catalogue with descriptions of resources in the form of XML files with metadata records based on ISO 19115.
  • Viewing service is based on web-based application accessible via the browser and provides:
    • data search that defines a sampling criteria using a map (region, time period, resource)
    • access to remote data sources via the Integration Server
    • processing of transport data files, tabular-graphics and map visualization of data
  • Analysis service developed as a WMS/WFS service for interactive and presentation of multidisciplinary data and products on a map.
  • Download service provides the loading the data to the user. Available data formats are NetCDF, ASCII and XML.
