Pilot Project

WIGOS components
The Pilot Project for the Integration of Marine Meteorological and Other Appropriate Oceanographic Observation Systems into WIGOS, also called the JCOMM Pilot Project for WIGOS, is an interdisciplinary exercise to enable the integration of marine and other appropriate oceanographic observations (in-situ, surface marine and satellite), real time and delayed mode data and products within the oceanographic marine community [1]. The Pilot Project, which will be implemented and sustained by the WMO and IOC Members through JCOMM, will make appropriate datasets available in real-time and delayed mode through interoperability arrangements with the WMO Information System (WIS) and the IODE Ocean Data Portal (ODP).The deliverables of the WIGOS Pilot Project for JCOMM are to
  1. document and integrate instrument best practices and related standards,
  2. build marine data systems that are interoperable with the WIS, and
  3. promote Quality Management and Standards (QMS).

The Pilot Project will address instrument best practices and traceability to agreed standards through enhanced cooperation with CIMO. Efforts will be made to update the WMO Guide to Meteorological Instruments and Methods of Observation (WMO-No. 8) and other appropriate WMO and IOC documentation, establishing regional marine instrument centres, and conducting instrument intercomparisons.

Cooperation with the IOC’s International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange (IODE) programme and its network of National Oceanographic Data Centres (NODC) is a major component of this project. This will permit the development of appropriate connections between the IODE ODP and the WIS for historical and recent data, including new sources of data for their integration into the WIGOS framework. Access to ocean datasets will be facilitated through ODP connectivity to the WIS.

The Pilto Project concluded in December 2010 after a period of two years. The Project Report is available from the WIGOS website[2]. This Pilot Project, together with other Pilot and Demonstration Projects, has contributed to the test of concept phase of WIGOS.
