Scope of this Section
This section of OceanTeacher includes articles that describe all the types of marine data and derived products likely to be encountered by a data manager, along with articles describing some of the special concepts unique to marine observations. The intention here is not to provide a general introduction to the sciences of the sea, but only to cover those topics that a marine data manager must know. The sub-sections should be obvious from their titles.
Recent Conference Proceedings in Marine Sciences
We provide here, however, as on all major topical pages in Marine Data Infrastructure, a listing of the most recent major international conference proceedings in this topic, where abstracts, full text or recorded talks are provided. We present these resources here, because typically they precede formal publications (and large website resources) by seasons to years. Besides reading the articles listed below, the earnest reader should look through these papers to gain insight into the latest results and trends. Included among the conference presentation, are overview papers of considerable scope.
- 2008 Ocean Sciences Meeting: From the Watershed to the Global Ocean 2-7 March 2008, Orlando, Florida, USA
- 2010 Ocean Sciences Meeting - 22–26 February 2010, Portland, Oregon, USA; upcoming
- The 89th American Meteorological Society Annual Meeting - Phoenix, Arizona, USA, 10-16 January, 2009; includes recorded presentations from the main meeting and 34 satellite symposia
- American Meteorological Society 90th Annual Meeting and Exhibition - 17-21 January 2010, Atlanta, Georgia, USA; upcoming
- Americal Geophysical Union Fall Meeting - San Francisco, California, USA, 15-19 December, 2008; abstracts and recorded feature presentations
- American Geophysical Union 2009 Joint Assembly - The Meeting of the Americas, 24–27 May 2009, Toronto, Ontario, Canada; abstracts
- International Conference on Marine Data and Information Systems (IMDIS) - Paris, March 29-31, 2010 - The Conference program was sub-dividided into 4 themes: (i) Data quality issues in ocean science; (ii) Data circulation and services in ocean science; (iii) Interoperability and standards in marine data management; and (iv) Education in ocean science. This was followed by a roundtable discussion on "Future prospective on linking distributed marine data systems". All PDF oral presentations and all videos (by IOC/IODE) are available for each IMDIS Session.
- WIO-DBCP workshop: The First IOC-WMO Data Buoy Cooperation Panel In-Region Western Indian Ocean Capacity Building Workshop, 19 - 23 April 2010, Cape Town, South Africa - Implementation and Operations Of Indian Ocean Data Buoy Networks and their Applications for Enhancing Regional Predictive Capability
