Background

This is a collection of some of the most important marine data catalogs and marine data website we've encountered during a decade of training and writing lessons and tutorials.

Marine Data Catalogs

The catalogs are self-evident, and should be easy to use. Most of them are based on surveys (and resulting metadata records) of datasets/dataservers throughout the web. Some of these are actually single sites that contain so many resources they require their own index.

  • GLOSS Station Handbook - Information on each of the tide gauges in 'Global Core Network' of 287 stations around the world for long term climate change and oceanographic sea level monitoring.
  • ICES Cruise Summary Reports (CSR) - Includes a searchable database for all CSR/ROSCOPs, the senior metadata format in marine science; CSR/ROSCOPs describe data collections at the cruise level
  • NOAA Observing Systems Architecture (NOSA) - Overview of all US NOAA observing systems, with Open GIS, live access server [currently inoperable; 2008-11-06] and Google Earth access to station maps and satellite view schema
  • NOAA Server - Search for environmental information on multiple NOAA computers; retrieve data from NOAA's electronic archives; view graphics; download or order data
  • PAGES Pale Data Access Page - Corals, Diatoms, Foraminifera, Lakes, Oceans, Ostracodes, Astronomy and Atmosphere, Climate, Modeling, Environmental Isotopes, Historical Data, Documentary Data/Archeology, Borehole Data, Dendrochronology, Fire, Geology/Geomorphology/Paleoenvironment, Insects, Paleobiology/Paleontology, River Runoff, Snow and Ice, Soils, Tephra
  • US NODC Oceanographic Data - Archived original data, parameter-specific collections, processed data and project data, World Ocean Database/Atlas products, satellite products, special coastal projects

Selected Marine Data Websites

The listings of marine datasets in the six subsections of this article (see links, below) are an amalgamation of all the specific websites we have used to construct national marine data collections and regional marine atlases. They are mainly interfaces to single datasets or narrowly focused data collections. Very large sites with many resources are not listed here, but are included with the catalogs, above.
