Marine Data Infrastructure

Contents

This division can be considered to contain the "nuts and bolts" of marine data: How are marine datasets structured and what do they contain? It includes many basic articles, relating to the ways that fundamental concepts are stored in datasets, such as time, location, formats, number types, etc. These concepts are often assumed to be well-known, but even among graduate students and professionals, they are sometimes not well defined or misunderstood.

Subsections of this Article

Pagename Short title Description
Geospatial Data Concepts Geospatial Data Concepts Geospatial Concepts This section of OceanTeacher contains articles concerning the ways that locations on the earth surface, taking both height and depth above reference surfaces into account, are recorded in datasets or incorporated into data products -- including maps.
Marine Data Concepts Marine Data Concepts Marine Concepts This section of OceanTeacher includes articles that describe all the types of marine data and derived products likely to be encountered by a data manager, along with articles describing some of the special concepts unique to marine observations. The intention here is not to provide a general introduction to the sciences of the sea, but only to cover those topics that a marine data manager must know.
Marine Data Format Types Marine Data Format Types Data Format Types Descriptions (with examples) of the 13 basic types of formats encountered in the marine sciences.
Marine Data Temporal Concepts Marine Data Temporal Concepts Temporal Concepts This section of OceanTeacher covers the ways that time (year, season, month, day, etc.) is recorded in marine data, and the various types of time-anchored data products, ranging range from instaneous views to long-term averages
Metadata Metadata Metadata Introduction to metadata for ocean data managers
Numerical Data Numerical Data Numerical Data This section of OceanTeacher includes both the physical formats of the numbers, the methods to accommodate scalars and more complex grids & vectors, and file identification.
Remote Sensing Data Concepts Remote Sensing Data Concepts Remote Sensing Concepts This section of OceanTeacher contains a broad range of articles describing remote sensing concepts that should be known to a marine data manager.
