Marine data management is an extremely broad term, referring to many aspects of proper data operations within research, survey and operational oceanography (and closely allied subject areas). Within this broad category, data are:

  • Stored/archived in safe environments
  • Assigned to the care and monitoring of specific persons
  • Managed for quality using a wide variety of analytical tools
  • Cataloged and described
  • Prepared for delivery to requesting scientists
  • Reformatted as needed for specialized applications, such as models
  • Synthesized with other data into high-level collections, such as atlases
  • Published in various media

This division of OceanTeacher attempts to formalize the various aspects of marine data management into a typology, i.e. a hierarchical set of topics, that explains how these jobs are done and the fundamental concepts that underlie them.
