The procedures, exercises and systems employed to insure the reliability and accuracy of marine data. QM is usually considered to consist of the two phases Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC). QA and QC processes for marine data are contained in many detailed manuals and protocols, often developed during specific large-scale projects. In some cases, these have subsequently been adopted for general use. As a standard procedure in many marine programs, the finally assessed "quality" of the data is recorded alongside the actual values by the insertion of numeric flags for consideration by prospective users.
