Marine Hydrosphere Data Websites

Contents

  • Baltic Sea Now - Nearly realtime information of the Baltic Sea level, wave height, ice conditions and algae blooms in summer time; some parameters are also forecasted
  • CORIOLIS Web Data Selection - XBT, XCTD or XBT from research or opportunity vessels; Argo profiling floats; anchored buoys or moorings; drifting buoys.
  • ERDDAP Environmental Research Division's Data Access Program - Arguably the most powerful, comprehensive and best structured interface to major marine, atmosphere and remote sensing datasets on the web today. Separate menus and underlying protocol structures allow the user to access measurement tables, gridded results and WMS images of analyzed results. The extremely simple data selection forms are infinitely easier than many other services, and the number of available download formats exceeds all other known sites. This site should be the first resource to be consulted when a new data search is necessary.
  • Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean (ECCO) - To provide a high resolution coupled ocean/sea-ice/biochemical (and ultimately, consistent atmospheric) state estimate; current work includes approximately the past 50 years of data and some work with the current state (i.e. nowcasting)
  • GFDL Data Portal - Simulations and climatological data fields from the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory; a live access server is cited, but apparently is inoperable at the present time [2008-11-06]
  • GLobal Ocean Data Analysis Project (GLODAP) - A unified data set to help determine the global distributions of both natural and anthropogenic inorganic carbon, including radiocarbon...The final result is a data set with more than 12,000 oceanographic stations with 353,042 unique samples. [Editor's Note: This extremely clean compilation is used in the OceanTeacher Roadmap exercises for purposes of quality controling other data]
  • HERMES - Web portal to access the GlobColour Project datasets (ENVISAT/MERIS, MODIS/AQUA, OrbView-2 /SeaWiFS)
  • HYCOM Consortium Data Products and Servers - This website provides access to near real time global HYCOM + NCODA based ocean prediction system output. The ocean prediction system runs daily at 1800 hrs and produces a five day hindcast (analysis) and a five day forecast.
  • Mercator Ocean - Disseminated data files and products. Registration required before access
  • US GODAE Data - Live access to model-related and real-time datasets, including the global GHRSST product
  • NCEP Marine Modeling and Analysis Branch Operational Products - Real-Time Ocean Forecast System (Global); Real-Time Ocean Forecast System (Atlantic); Ocean Waves -- NOAA Wavewatch III Ocean Wave Model; Sea Ice Concentration Analysis; Satellite Derived Ocean Surface Winds; Daily Sea Surface Temperature Analysis; Sea Ice Drift Model; Coastal Visibility Model; Global Visibility Model; Ship Superstructure Ice Accretion Model; Automated Gulf Stream
  • NASA Ocean Color Web - MODIS-Terra & Aqua, OCTS, SeaWIFS and CZCS data products from daily/synoptic to climatological products (NOTE: Hover cursor over thumbnail images to get download controls. SMI product is an HDF image file; BIN product (also HDF) is huge, containing all system data).
  • Naval Oceanography Portal - Consolidated site for all oceanography and meteorology products from the U.S. Naval Observatory (USNO), the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC), the Naval Oceanography Operations Command (NOOC), the Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center (FNMOC, and the Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVO)
  • Ocean Data Portal - ODP is being developed to provide a standards-based infrastructure that integrates marine data and information from a network of distributed IODE National Oceanographic Data Centers. The system requires extensive software installation for data providers.
  • Ocean Productivity - To provide global, updated ocean productivity estimates, plus information on the models employed, access to model code and ancillary data sets, and comparisons of productivity estimates for alternative models.
  • UCAR/CISL Oceanographic Datasets - International Comprehensive Ocean-Atmosphere Data Set (ICOADS) and other marine surface observations; Sea Surface Temperature; Subsurface observations (profiles) and analyses; Heat budgets, wind, and wind stress; Sea ice, bathymetry, and sea level; Precipitation, waves, pressure, and misc. surface analyses; Ocean model input and output; Satellite data.
  • University of Hawaii Sea Level Center - Provides three online databases; the research quality data , the GLOSS/CLIVAR "fast delivery" data, and the JCOMM Sea Level Program in the Pacific map data.
  • World Ocean Optics Database (WOOD) - Includes nearly 250 major data sources (including NASA’s public portions of SeaBASS and NODC’s World Ocean Dataset optics and chlorophyll profiles) and provides over 40 derived and measured physical properties, including Inherent and Apparent Optical Properties (IOPs and AOPs), pigments and nutrients, Secchi depths, and temperature and salinity.
  • WOCE Global Hydrographic Climatology] - a consistent and coherent hydrographic gridded full–depth data set on 45 depth levels with a 0.5° spatial resolution. High quality hydrographic observations from the WOCE one–time and repeat hydrographic cruises with ca. 9000 stations for the period 1990 – 1998 are the modern basis.
  • WOCE Atlas, Volume 1: Southern Ocean Atlas - The WOCE Atlas volumes each have three main components: Full-depth sections, horizontal maps of properties on density surfaces and depth levels, and property-property plots. The vertical sections feature potential temperature, salinity, potential density, neutral density, oxygen, nitrate, phosphate, silicate, CFC-11, d3He, tritium, 14C, 13C, total alkalinity and total carbon dioxide, against depth along the WOCE Hydrographic Programme one-time lines.
