Project Name Standards for Marine DataContents |
Background
In January, 2008, the IOC and JCOMM convened a workshop entitled the IODE/JCOMM Forum on Oceanographic Data Management and Exchange Standards (IOC Workshop Rept. 206), to consider selected principal issues on establishing marine data standards, with the goal of furthering marine data interoperability. In particular the aim of the workshop was to get broad agreement and commitment to adopt a number of standards related to ocean data management and exchange, thereby assembling not only the agreed conditions by which we operate, but in fact enact these agreements in the participants' respective organizations.
Standards Recommendation
Dr Lesley Rickards introduced this item and moderated discussions. She reviewed the various lists of projects that exist and so are available for adoption.
- Global Change Master Directory Projects Keywords
- Unique codes for each project name consist of 3- to 35-letter acronym strings
- About 75 code/acronyms do not have project names
- U.S.A. NODC Project Code List
- Unique numerical project codes in the range 1-999
- 9999 = UNKNOWN
- Many project names have no acronym
- Some acronyms have no project names
Decisions
- The meeting noted that many lists exist but that there is no clear candidate for a standard at this time. It was considered that a reference list of projects can be useful to match projects with data as well as with institutions and people. In this regard an ontology approach was mentioned.
