Project and System Data Manuals

Contents

Background

Nearly all major programs, at some time, have issued data management manuals for the specific methods and procedures they adopt for their own use. These manuals are hardly comprehensive for all purposes, hence the need for OceanTeacher itself. But they contain valuable precedent information and specific protocols that can be useful to other activities. They also can be vital pieces of information if questions arise concerning the datasets published by the activity. In the special case of the ICES Guidelines (below) a whole suite of manuals was developed for the use of national institutions participating in international cooperative work, covering many named projects.

In addition to this, major international communications and coordination systems, such as Service Argos, have issued manuals on the protocols to be followed by system participants, as the contribute data to or obtain products from the systems. Both of these types of manuals are cataloged here.
