Quality Control of Marine Temperature-Salinity ProfilesContents |
Background
In January, 2008, the IOC and JCOMM convened a workshop entitled the IODE/JCOMM Forum on Oceanographic Data Management and Exchange Standards (IOC Workshop Rept. 206), to consider selected principal issues on establishing marine data standards, with the goal of furthering marine data interoperability. In particular the aim of the workshop was to get broad agreement and commitment to adopt a number of standards related to ocean data management and exchange, thereby assembling not only the agreed conditions by which we operate, but in fact enact these agreements in the participants' respective organizations.
Standards Recommendation
Mr. Loic Petit de la Villeon (France IFREMER) introduced this item and moderated discussions. He reviewed the various quality control procedures that exist for verifying temperature and salinity profiles. Mr. Loic Petit de la Villeon stated that the GTSPP realtime QC manual (IOC Manuals and Guides No 22), if revised, should be considered as the reference manual.
- Argo Quality Control Manual (2.3)
- Coriolis Data Centre In-situ Data Quality Control (1.3)
- GTSPP Real-Time Quality Control Manual (IOC M&G 22)
- Quality control cookbook for XBT data (expendable bathythermograph data): Version 1.1 (CSIRO Rep 221)
- System of Control Oriented Oceanographic Parameters (SCOOP)
- Data Quality Control Procedures Applied to the M3A buoys
- Procedures Used at AOML to Quality Control Real Time XBT Data Collected in the Atlantic Ocean (NOAA Tech Memorandum ERL AOML-78)
- UK Argo floats realtime quality control tests - Although extremely short, and lacking detail, this concise list of tests is one of the most comprehensive
- Quality Control and Processing of Historical Oceanographic Temperature, Salinity, and Oxygen Data (NOAA Tech Rep NESDIS 81)
Decisions
- The meeting did not identify a recommended standard
- It was agreed that Mr. R. Keeley (Canada MEDS) and Mr. G. Reed (Australia AODCJF) will request GTSPP (through its Chair, Charles Sun [US NOAA]), the Argo data management team, the DBCP and SOOPIP to revise IOC Manuals and Guides No. 22
- It was agreed that GTSPP should prepare the submission document
Additional Resources
- Manual of Quality Control Procedures for Validations of Oceanographic Data (IOC M&G 26)
- Building a Global Ocean Profile Database to Estimate and Heat and Freshwater Variability for the World Ocean - Extremely general description, but contains some great examples of QC problems
- Salinity Data Management Best Practices Workshop Report - Generally speaking, a good QA resource; but very little information directly related to S profiles, per se.
- The Acquisition, calibration, and analysis of CTD data: a report of SCOR Working Group 51. 1988. UNESCO technical papers in marine science No. 54
